Frequently Asked Questions

Zinnia

We offer consumer-friendly zinnia seeds that are easy to grow and suitable for gardeners of all levels, from beginners to experts.

Are zinnias annuals or perennials?

Garden zinnias are grown as annual flowers and complete their life cycle in a single growing season.

How long does it take zinnias to bloom from seed?

Most zinnias begin flowering about 16–20 weeks after sowing.

What type of container should I use to start zinnia seeds indoors?

Individual cells or biodegradable pots help reduce root disturbance and make transplanting zinnia seedlings easier.

Why do zinnias dislike transplanting?

Zinnias are sensitive to root disturbance. Damaging the roots during transplanting can slow growth or stress young plants.

Can zinnia seedlings be transplanted?

Yes, but zinnias dislike root disturbance. If transplanting is necessary, move seedlings while they are young and handle the roots carefully.

How long does it take for zinnia seeds to germinate?

Under favorable conditions, zinnia seeds germinate quickly, often within five days. However, germination can take up to 14 days depending on soil temperature, moisture, and growing conditions.

What temperature is best for germinating zinnia seeds?

Zinnia seeds germinate best at about 70°F (21°C).

When should I sow zinnia seeds?

Sow zinnia seeds from early to mid-spring after the danger of frost has passed and the soil has begun to warm.

Can I mix zinnia seeds in with my wildflower mix?

Yes—and it’s a good idea. Annuals like zinnias sprout and bloom faster than many perennials, so they fill in bare spots while the longer-lived wildflowers establish. Just remember to loosen the soil and rake in lightly so both seed types have good soil contact.

My Ferry-Morse Zinnias have gray leaves and stems. What’s causing this?

Grayish leaves or stems on zinnias are often caused by powdery mildew or aphid infestations—sometimes both. Powdery mildew appears as a whitish-gray film on foliage, especially in humid late-summer weather. Check the undersides of leaves for small, soft-bodied aphids. To manage them, spray plants with a strong stream of water to dislodge insects, prune heavily affected leaves, and improve airflow. Neem oil sprays can help control both aphids and fungal issues.

Beautiful

"The Zinnia giant cactus mixed flower seeds are such a beautiful mix of giant cactus zinnia flowers. I started my seeds later than anticipated, but still grew beautiful flowers. Overall, the seeds were easy to grow and sprouted rather quickly. I would recommend this flower."

Heatherg295 (4/5)

Very beautiful.

"I love to plant when the spring comes. . I buy variety of mixed seeds wildflowers, zinnias, marigolds every year. . This year the Zinnias are going a little slower then I wanted but I know when they bloom they are going to be beautiful. . as you can see my sunflowers are blooming and beautiful also from the same brand Ferry-Morse thank you for this amazing seeds. ."

Jeanetter30 (5/5)

Okay seeds among many options out there

"Nice color selection, although not a very big packet of seeds. Germination rate about average depending on the soil used the germinate and method. Haven't really been able to see true growth rate at time of review"

Taoofraychel (4/5)

On track, seeds seem happy

"So far I haven’t seen much progress in the seedlings growing. There are little sprouts in some but they’re still growing. I can’t talk on the variety as I don’t see any colors yet, but I’m sure they are gorgeous once they’re fully matured. They’re covered while they’re growing so I also am not sure how they’ll do outdoors with pests either. The packaging of the seeds themselves seems sturdy as well, peace of mind knowing your seeds aren’t going to fly around when being delivered 🙂"

Kmcnamara (4/5)

Grows fast

"I am excited to see the zinnias bloom. I hade growth within 3 days. I water them daily if no rain and they are doing so well growing. I have mine in a container and they are thriving. I have no big issues at this time and again can’t wait for the blooms I would definitely buy this brand in the future."

Rc9999 (5/5)

Great germination rates

"These zinnia seeds germinated and just a few days and continue to grow really well. I have been growing zinnias for quite some time and one thing I've noticed about these is the rabbits really love them. I hope that someday in the future there are varieties that become resistant to rabbits and other critters. as I normally do once they are germinating well and have two sets of true leaves I snip them just above a node and they continue to branch out producing more blooms. These ones still have another few weeks before I'm seeing blooms but I'm really happy with them so far."

Lisapisa3 (5/5)

Not a ton of seeds, but they are growing

"There weren’t a whole lot of seeds in the envelope compared to other brands I have purchased. It seems like there aren’t a whole lot of seeds that sprouted, but we have had issues with bugs eating our other zinnias. I can’t speak to the blossoms, as I haven’t seen them yet. I’m looking forward to seeing these seeds fully mature, as I love zinnias!"
