Frequently Asked Questions

Zinnia

We offer consumer-friendly zinnia seeds that are easy to grow and suitable for gardeners of all levels, from beginners to experts.

Are zinnias annuals or perennials?

Garden zinnias are grown as annual flowers and complete their life cycle in a single growing season.

How long does it take zinnias to bloom from seed?

Most zinnias begin flowering about 16–20 weeks after sowing.

What type of container should I use to start zinnia seeds indoors?

Individual cells or biodegradable pots help reduce root disturbance and make transplanting zinnia seedlings easier.

Why do zinnias dislike transplanting?

Zinnias are sensitive to root disturbance. Damaging the roots during transplanting can slow growth or stress young plants.

Can zinnia seedlings be transplanted?

Yes, but zinnias dislike root disturbance. If transplanting is necessary, move seedlings while they are young and handle the roots carefully.

How long does it take for zinnia seeds to germinate?

Under favorable conditions, zinnia seeds germinate quickly, often within five days. However, germination can take up to 14 days depending on soil temperature, moisture, and growing conditions.

What temperature is best for germinating zinnia seeds?

Zinnia seeds germinate best at about 70°F (21°C).

When should I sow zinnia seeds?

Sow zinnia seeds from early to mid-spring after the danger of frost has passed and the soil has begun to warm.

Can I mix zinnia seeds in with my wildflower mix?

Yes—and it’s a good idea. Annuals like zinnias sprout and bloom faster than many perennials, so they fill in bare spots while the longer-lived wildflowers establish. Just remember to loosen the soil and rake in lightly so both seed types have good soil contact.

My Double Zinnia flowers don’t look “double.” Did I get the wrong type?

Probably not. Newly opened zinnia blooms often start with a single row of petals before filling out. Within a few days, they develop the full, layered look typical of double varieties. Keep plants watered, provide full sun, and wait for flowers to mature—petal fullness increases as blooms age.

My Ferry-Morse Zinnias have gray leaves and stems. What’s causing this?

Grayish leaves or stems on zinnias are often caused by powdery mildew or aphid infestations—sometimes both. Powdery mildew appears as a whitish-gray film on foliage, especially in humid late-summer weather. Check the undersides of leaves for small, soft-bodied aphids. To manage them, spray plants with a strong stream of water to dislodge insects, prune heavily affected leaves, and improve airflow. Neem oil sprays can help control both aphids and fungal issues.

Great Service

"Very nice service from Ferry Thank you !"

Zinnia Red Fire Ball

"Love the bright red color and large blooms."

John L. (5/5)

Bright blooms and does well despite temperature swings

"I planted these seeds along with several other wildflowers and love the beautiful pops of color! I have not seen any damage from pests or bugs but did have to keep a few bunnies away! I used a regular potting soil mix and watered often during the hot, dry days but not if it had been raining. The flowers did fairly well even with some temperature swings (low 60s to mid 90s)."

Themommychick (5/5)

Great filler flower!

"The flowers were absolutely beautiful. Wide variety of colors. They are weedy looking but it was great for a filler space next to the house. They held up pretty well with my poor maintenance habits. I was surprised."

Rls4407 (5/5)

Great Seeds

"I really like these zinnia seeds they really grow nice and they last all summer long."

Jimmy B. (5/5)

Definitely seeds!

"So I got these as a cheap start to get into gardening, previously with no experience. Can’t compare to other brands but these seemed pretty good and doesn’t seem to have any issues growing. Water, pot, soil, seeds and time. Good combo."

Franciscoe (5/5)

Amazing flowers

"I planted them and about 39 dayskater I now have 4 inch green leaves and about 20 plants starting to grow. No blooms yet. But it was easy to germinating and plant. Full sun daily water."

Polishmarta (5/5)

Planting these Ferry-Morse Giant Double Scarlet Zinnias was so easy!

"I received this free package of Ferry-Morse Giant Double Scarlet Flame Zinnia seeds from @influenster and was very excited to plant them! I love Zinnias and especially in red colors. They are great flowers for pollinators. I planted them in a really large pot and covered the seeds with a 1/4th inch of soil, spacing them around 12 inches apart, per the package instructions. They are supposed to grow to 2-1/2-3 ft tall! The seeds were easy to work with. I wish I could provide a picture of a beautiful flower, but I’m still patiently waiting for them to bloom as it can take between 35-60 days from planting. They have been in the soil for about 1-1/2 weeks but haven’t germinated yet. There were plenty of seeds in the packet and I’m anxiously awaiting for them all to bloom. I do recommend these Ferry-Morse Zinnia seeds to add a pop of red color to your flower garden! #influenster #Ferry-Morris"

Pamv2 (5/5)

Grew!

"Received my sample of zinnia seeds and planted them and put them on my deck (figured I can transplant them to the ground once they’re grown a little) and they took right off with really no help from me, just mother natures rain and sun. No bugs on them, no squirrels have messed with them, my dog hasn’t been attracted to them either…will see what the deer think later. But anyway I’m impressed at how well they have done with no attention and cannot wait to see them grow!"

Andreah423 (5/5)

Quality

"The quality and seeds are great. I appreciate the instructions provided on the packaging also. I didn’t have success in my yard with growing. I’m going to assume due to the extreme weather conditions in my area. Hopefully next year they’ll began to grow."
