Heirloom Seeds

What exactly are heirloom seeds?

To keep this answer simple, heirloom seeds are the seeds of plants which have been saved from generation to generation. Heirloom seeds come from plants that are open-pollinated. Open-pollination is a natural occurrence where plants are pollinated from uncontrolled factors such as animals (deer, hummingbirds, bees, etc.) and weather (like wind or rain).

Usually varieties referred to as heirloom have been around for more than 50 years and offer a wonderful history in the names and flavors that continually provide dependable quality season after season. Not all seeds are heirloom seeds. If they are, then they will be marked as such.

The seed from heirloom plants can be saved at the end of the season to be used again the next year!

Product Information

Get your heirloom carrots growing with these high quality Scarlet Nantes Carrot seeds!

Scarlet Nantes carrots have a crispy, sweet flavor which makes them absolutely perfect for snacking. Nearly coreless, Scarlet Nantes carrots grow to be 6" long and feature a great red-orange color. These carrots do particularly well in clay soil.

Key Features

Flavor: Sweet and flavorful.

Preparation Ideas: Use these in soups, stews, and gourmet salads.

Plant Type: Vegetable

Fill Weight (grams): 2

Growth Type: Root

Instructions

In full sun and well-drained soil, sow 4 seeds per inch in the row. Cover the seeds firmly with soil. When the plants are 2 inches tall, thin to 3 inches apart in the row. For fresh carrots all season, plant every 3 weeks until 75 days before the first fall frost.

Planting Depth: .25"

Seed Spacing: When sowing Scarlet Nantes Carrot seeds, sow 4 seeds per inch in a row and when seedlings are 2" high, thin seedlings to 3" apart.

Suggestions

Too much water can cause carrots to crack. They should be kept weeded (a clean mulch can reduce this job). Also, lightly place soil over exposed roots to prevent cracking.

Product Information

These Heirloom Black Beauty Eggplant seeds grow into large, spreading bushy plants that will bear 6-12 glossy purple fruits for your enjoyment.

Black Beauty Eggplant is a favorite ingredient used in Mediterranean style cooking. We consider this eggplant to be one of the best heirloom eggplant varieties available! It's also low in calories, with only 20 per cup.

Key Features

Flavor: Tender, rich, and full eggplant flavor.

Preparation Ideas: Popular in Mediterranean dishes.

Plant Type: Vegetable

Fill Weight (grams): 0.2

Growth Type: Bush

Instructions

Start eggplant seeds indoors in a warm, sunny location 8-10 weeks before planting outdoors. Wait 3 weeks after the last frost to transplant outside. Or, in warmer climates, sow directly in the garden. Successfully growing eggplant requires full sun and rich, fertile, well-draining soil.

Planting Depth: .25"

Seed Spacing: Sow Heirloom Black Beauty Eggplant seeds roughly 3' apart in rows.

Suggestions

You can tell when an eggplant is ripe by its glossy purple look. Harvest eggplant fruits while they are still shiny and about the size of your fist. Cut from the stem with a knife.
