The hollow, thin leaves of Chives have a delicate flavoring much like very mild onions. It's delicious in salads and for flavoring soups and omelettes. Because of the plant's attractive cloverlike blossoms, they are often used for edging flowerbeds.

Start seeds indoors in a sunny location 6 weeks before planting outdoors. Or, sow seeds in the garden in a sunny location in rich, well-drained soil. Performs best in rows 12 inches apart. Thin or transplant plants to 6 inches apart when they are 2 inches tall. Leaves can be harvested 4 months after sowing, then cut often.
Continual harvesting ensures denser growth. If you prefer a very mild taste, harvest while in bloom. Excellent for indoor windowsill gardens.
